How to create and submit a sitemap to Google?

A sitemap is an XML file that contains a list of important website pages and helps search engines find and index them more quickly. For Google, it is one of the main guidelines when crawling a website.

Creating a sitemap

A sitemap is usually created automatically using a CMS (e.g., WordPress, Shopify, OpenCart) or SEO plugins. In these cases, the file is generated in XML format and updated when new pages are added.

If your website doesn't use an auto-generated CMS, you can create a sitemap using online generators or SEO tools. The resulting file, sitemap.xml, is placed in the root of your website (e.g., site.com/sitemap.xml).

Structure check

Once created, it's important to ensure the sitemap contains only relevant and indexable pages. It shouldn't include duplicates, no-index pages, service sections, or closed URLs.

Submit to Google

To submit a sitemap to a search engine, use Google Search Console. In the service's interface, add the sitemap.xml address to the appropriate section. Once submitted, Google begins using the file as a source for crawling the site and discovering new pages.

Why is this important?

A sitemap speeds up indexing, especially for large websites and new projects. It helps search engines quickly find pages that may not be linked internally or that are deeply embedded in the site structure.

However, it's important to understand that having a sitemap does not guarantee indexing —Google makes the final decision based on the quality and relevance of the pages.
